Wyeth, Andrew (Newell) 1917- . US painter.
His portraits and landscapes, usually in
watercolour or tempera, are naturalistic,
minutely detailed, and often have a strong
sense of the isolation of the countryside:
for example, Christina's World 1948 (Museum
of Modern Art, New York). Born in Chadds
Ford, Pennsylvania, the son of
artist-illustrator N C Wyeth, he is among the
most popular of contemporary US artists. His
paintings depict people of the land,
especially Wyeth's own surroundings in Chadds
Ford and Maine, where his summer home is
located. His son James Browning Wyeth (1946-)
also is an artist.
